    Mobile computing is accelerating beyond the smartphone era. Today, people wear smart glasses, smart watches, and fitness devices, and they carry smartphones, tablets, and laptops. In a decade, the very same people are likely to wear or carry tens of wireless devices and interact with the Internet and computing infrastructure in markedly different ways. Computer scientist Xia Zhou is working to make sure there are no traffic jams with the increased demand. With support from the National Science Foundation, Zhou and her team at Dartmouth College are developing ways to encode and transmit all that data faster and more securely.     Kathryn Johnson, an electrical engineer at the Colorado School of Mines, studies large utility-scale wind turbines. Kathryn’s research aims to make the turbines more efficient in order to capture as much of the wind’s energy as possible. Viewers also visit NSF’s National Center for Atmospheric Research, where scientists are working with local utility companies to create an advanced wind energy prediction system. Using data from sensors mounted on each turbine, the system generates a forecast specific to each turbine on a wind farm. This helps the utility company provide as much energy as possible from clean sources.

    There’s been a lot of research on what happens to a river when dams are built, but what happens when a dam is torn down? With support from the National Science Foundation, Dartmouth College geographer Frank Magilligan is researching the impact of dam removal. His lab has been at the relatively small Homestead Dam, built more than 200 years ago along the Ashuelot River in New Hampshire. He and his team have collected data on the ecology and geology of the Ashuelot River both before and after the Dam removal. Now, they’ll be documenting the processes of ecological restoration and how the path of the river is changing.

    Go into any grocery store and cameras may be watching you. These cameras are not looking for thieves, they’re looking for shoppers. The cameras are focused on the tops of peoples’ heads (so it’s anonymous), but they don’t have to see faces to track which store aisles get the most traffic and how long consumers spend looking over products. With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientist and CEO of VideoMining Rajeev Sharma and his team have designed software that automatically generates statistics about in-store shopping behavior. These statistics can provide valuable insights for supporting critical decisions in store layout design, merchandising, marketing, and customer service. Sharma’s team has developed similar technology to help caregivers monitor the elderly.

    Visionary oceanographer Scott Glenn leads a team of scientists as they race against time to launch the first autonomous underwater robot across the vast and dangerous Atlantic Ocean. Destined for Spain, the 8-foot bright yellow robot named RU27, or "Scarlet," is launched off the coast of New Jersey. Throughout her journey, data collected by Scarlet is fed into oceanographic navigation and forecasting models. Engulfed by the powerful ocean, our robot hero faces extreme weather conditions, ship traffic, and aggressive sea life that can terminate her mission. If Scarlet can successfully cross the vast Atlantic Ocean, her historic mission will inspire a future robotic oceanographic observation network critical for monitoring and predicting climate change.
