What is visual contamination? Students try to guess what this concept means. Mónica Basto visits William Molano, an expert on visual contamination, clears up questions about this topic. Sara Sánchez travels throughout the city and shows how the excess of advertisements affect the environment.

It is important to properly dispose of metals for the safety of people and the environment. Due to potential contamination problems, environmental programs focus on the recycling, reusing, and reducing of metals.
Landfills are full of tires, and special attention must be given to their disposal. If they are not disposed of appropriately, they can cause contamination problems that affect people’s health, damage the environment, and lead to social and political conflicts.
How do horseshoe crabs keep humans healthy? They have blue, copper-based blood, which quickly clots in the presence of bacterial toxins. Medical researchers use it to test intravenous drugs, vaccines, and medical devices, ensuring that they are free of bacterial contamination. Part of "The Remarkable Horseshoe Crab" series.
Residents of Flint, Michigan describe their personal struggles with medical issues which arose from contaminated water. Lead from aging lines leached into the local water supply, along with bacteria and other contaminants, creating a serious health crisis. This documentary highlights the stories of residents who were personally injured, along with the work of local organizations and individuals that rallied to support them.
Energy has been essential for the development of human activities from the Industrial Revolution to present day. Over the course of history, human consumption of energy has increased significantly. Currently, society depends largely on nonrenewable energies that come from fossil fuels. However, the increase in greenhouse gas emissions has highlighted the need to change from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources that reduce environmental contamination. Many industries are committing to the development of alternative energy sources that don’t contribute to global warming. Chapter 9 of Air: Climate Change Series.
Draws on documentary and archival footage, 3-D and 2-D animations, and high-tech imaging to investigate a variety of virological topics: the nature of pandemics as illustrated by the SARS outbreak in China; genetic sequencing of Spanish influenza from exhumed tissue of a century-old corpse; how animal viruses jump the species barrier; the dissection of live viruses in a biosafety level-4 lab; the work of an Ebola research team in Gabon; the discovery of mimivirus; applications of Onyx-015, a genetically engineered adenovirus; and more. Features Vincent A. Fischetti of The Rockefeller University, Jeffery Taubenberger of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Y. Guan of The University of Hong Kong, Didier Raoult of the French National Center for Scientific Research, and other leading virus specialists.
It was an email from a colleague that tipped off environmental engineer Detlef Knappe of possible 1,4-dioxane contamination in the Cape Fear River Basin, North Carolina’s largest watershed and a source of drinking water for communities across the state. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified 1,4-dioxane as a probable human carcinogen. With support from a National Science Foundation grant, Knappe and his team at North Carolina State University have begun to identify 1,4-dioxane sources and how 1,4-dioxane impacts drinking water quality. Knappe is also working with managers at water treatment plants and state policymakers in North Carolina to improve testing and treatment standards for 1,4-dioxane. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
