Scientists have recently discovered that the California mantis shrimp can talk. Well, it’s not the same as human speech, but it is audible communication. Researchers studying sounds on the ocean floor had long suspected that burrow-dwelling creatures made noise, and they decided to spy on a group of shrimp by dropping recording devices into their habitat. What they heard was fascinating. The California mantis shrimp not only made noise, but each individual seemed to have its own unique voice. Part of the "News of the Day" series.

An introduction to sign vocabulary that is specific to science. Many interpreters, teachers, and students are unfamiliar with specialized sign vocabulary because the concepts occur infrequently in daily communication. In this video a Deaf professional signs vocabulary related to his field of expertise. The signs being demonstrated are commonly accepted by the Deaf community, but may not be the only sign for a specific word. Signs often vary across the country, so viewers are encouraged to confirm that signs used in this video are those used in their area/region of the country. Where appropriate, more than one sign or combinations of signs are demonstrated in this video for the same English word.
While Earth's weather reports center on precipitation, temperature, wind direction, and humidity, space weather forecasts attempt to predict activity that occurs on the sun. Scientists also study how the weather on the sun will affect Earth. At the University of Michigan a team studies solar storms as they form and then barrel off the sun. Sometimes these storms hit the Earth with damaging force. Space weather has the potential to interfere with everything from satellite communications to electrical power. This team is aiming for a five-day forecast capability to give government, private industry, satellite operators, and power grid companies more time to take necessary action to protect critical infrastructure.
