    The Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) helps an interdisciplinary group of scientists use oceanographic research approaches to investigate the mysteries of large lakes. With support from the National Science Foundation, LLO scientists work to better understand the biology, chemistry, physics, and geology of these bodies of water. In the summer of 2011, LLO scientists completed a 17- day research cruise on Lakes Superior, Huron, and Erie, focusing on how a buildup of nitrates may impact the ecology of all the Great Lakes. They say a greater understanding of lakes will ultimately improve our management and conservation efforts.

    Think of earthworms and a few things come to mind: they make great bait for fishing, they aerate the soil, and they’re an excellent addition to a compost pile. But, what a lot of people don’t know is many earthworms are actually invasive species. Earthworms may be small but when they take over a forest, the impact is dramatic. They cause the rapid incorporation of organic material into the soil, changing its structure, chemistry and nutrient dynamics. What's known as the duff layer is suddenly removed, and this duff, or decaying organic material on the forest floor, is habitat for several species of insects, spiders, small vertebrates, bacteria and fungi. It is also the primary rooting zone for most plants.

    The freezing and melting of water affects so much of the world. Ice crystals in thunderclouds create lightning. It is also powerful enough to crack boulders, float stones, and alter entire landscapes. Ice is a common substance, but it has some secrets and weird properties scientists have only just begun to understand. Part of the "It's Okay to Be Smart" series.

    Climb aboard the Cyclops, a microscopic research vessel, and investigate an amazing hidden world on which all living things depend. The Cyclops houses a team of scientists known as the Micronauts and guides them through their discoveries of biological classification, diversity, and ecology. In this episode, the Cyclops crashes into the bottom of the pond and discovers an ooze populated by bacteria. After gathering some, the Micronauts begin to investigate the chemical method the bacteria uses to decompose organic material. In the end, the bacterial also helps the crew escape the bottom of the pond so they can continue to explore. Part 5 of the Microscopic Monsters Series.

It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. "Where did the hot go?" wonders Arnold when he finds that his hot cocoa has cooled. In response, Ms. Frizzle whisks the class to the Arctic. What's the freezing Arctic got to do with heat? While the kids try to find out, the bus's engine freezes and the bus floats away. As the bus moves away, so does the heat from everyone's body. How can Ms. Frizzle's kids insulate their body to keep the heat in?

It is notable for its use of celebrity talent and being both highly entertaining and educational. When Wanda's favorite singer, Molly Cule, comes to town, she chooses Ms. Frizzle's class to wash her famous car. The kids clean it from top to bottom, but when Molly insists they missed a spot, they shrink down to see the molecules that make up the car. Only then can they discover how to clean it down to the very last bit. But time is running out. They'll need a molecular miracle to get the car clean before Molly's concert begins.

    In the first image, an oxygen atom is shown with six valence electrons. Four of these valence electrons form pairs at the top and right sides of the valence shell. The other two electrons are alone on the bottom and left sides. A hydrogen atom sits next to each the lone electron of the oxygen. Each hydrogen has only one valence electron. An arrow indicates that a reaction takes place. After the reaction, in the second image, each unpaired electron in the oxygen joins an electron from one of the hydrogen atoms so that the valence rings are now connected together. When they stop at Ms. Frizzle's house to sell her one, they find that her battery-operated doorbell doesn't work. While looking for Ms. Frizzle to tell her the doorbell's broken, Wanda overhears her teacher talking on the telephone. "Ms. Frizzle has a boyfriend," says Wanda, "and he's on his way over to see her. We've got to fix the doorbell or she'll never know he's here." But first they have to figure out how the doorbell works.

Hydrogen, in group 1, has one valence electron. Helium, in group 18, has two valence electrons. The 1n shell holds a maximum of two electrons, so the shell is full and the electron configuration is stable. Period 2, in which the 2n shell is filling, contains lithium, carbon, fluorine, and neon. Lithium, in group 1, has 1 valence electron. Carbon, in group 14, has 4 valence electrons. Fluorine, in group 17, has 7 valence electrons. Neon, in group 18, has 8 valence electrons, a full octet. Period 3, in which the 3n shell is filling, contains sodium, silicon, chlorine, and argon. Sodium, in group 1, has 1 valence electron. Silicon, in group 14, has 4 valence electrons. A full valence shell is the most stable electron configuration. Elements in other groups have partially filled valence shells and gain or lose electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration.
