Sea spray aerosols occur naturally in the salty ocean air, and there’s much more in each of those tiny bursting bubbles than salt. They’re bursting with ocean life, from bacteria to phytoplankton--even viruses. Because sea spray aerosols seed clouds, they affect the climate. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), atmospheric chemist Kimberly Prather of the University of California, San Diego, and chemist Vicki Grassian of the University of Iowa are leading a team of scientists around the country who are working to better understand what role sea spray aerosols play in weather and climate change climate models. Sometimes rip currents are referred to as "undertow" or "rip tides." These ocean phenomena are narrow currents in the surf zone that move quickly away from shore. A typical rip current ranges from 50-100 feet wide, and can extend 100 yards or more offshore. It can reach speeds of over 5 miles per hour, which makes them dangerous and potentially deadly. Scientists are studying these currents with the hopes of better forecasting when and where they will form. Part of the "Danger Zone" series.
Jennifer Keyes began her NASA career as an intern and then a co-operative education student in 1999. In these programs, she worked on projects in atmospheric science, subsonic aerodynamics, and space exploration. Currently she is an aerospace engineer working as a systems analyst for the Office of Strategic Analysis, Communication, and Business Development at NASA Langley Research Center. In this role, Jennifer supports the senior leadership team as the lead for strategic governance and business development. Part of the "Women@NASA" series.
Sunspots have fascinated sky gazers through the ages. Now state-of-the art telescopes combined with the muscle of a supercomputer called “Bluefire” are allowing scientists to accurately model these mysterious structures, and unlock their secrets. Michael Knoelker and Matthias Rempel are solar scientists working at the High Altitude Observatory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, known as NCAR, in Boulder, Colorado. With support from the National Science Foundation, their study of sunspots is critical to the understanding of how stars, like the sun, produce magnetic fields which is still one of the big unanswered questions in stellar astrophysics.
StormView™ is a software program that gauges how residents of hurricane-prone regions might react in the event of an imminent storm. It was developed by University of Miami professor Kenny Broad and a number of collaborators, and supported with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It includes TV meteorologist broadcasts, newspaper stories, web stories, bulletins from NOAA and even interactions with neighbors. Basking sharks are the second largest shark in the ocean, and NOAA scientists are using the latest technologies to study them. The scientists capture and tag the sharks in an effort to study their movements and preferred habitat. Part of "The Science Behind" series.
Five species of sea turtles are found in Florida’s waters and all are listed as threatened or endangered. Biologists off the Gulf Coast of Florida conduct in-water research and monitoring of the turtle species. They are collecting data on population trends and habitat utilization. At the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory tower, a team of scientists analyzes the isotope composition of water vapor and precipitation. The isotopes provide information about the source region of the water. The scientists can determine the extent to which rainwater comes directly from the ocean, evaporation, or plant transpiration.
