    The rock pocket mouse is a living example of Darwin’s process of natural selection. Not only is evolution happening right now everywhere around us, but adaptive changes can occur in a population with remarkable speed. This speed is essential if you’re a desert mouse living in an environment where a volcanic eruption can reverse selective pressure in nearly an instant. The film features Dr. Michael Nachman, whose work in the field and in the lab has quantified the selective pressure of predators and identified the genes involved in adaptation. In a complete story, from ecosystem to molecules, pocket mice show us how random changes in the genome can take many paths to the same adaptation—a colored coat that hides them from predators.

    University of Pennsylvania ecologist Peter Petraitis, California State Northridge biologist Steve Dudgeon, and their team have been returning to Maine’s rocky intertidal zone every spring and summer for nearly two decades. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), they survey a network of 60 experimental plots. The big question that brings them back year after year: Is an ecosystem like this a stable and permanent fixture, or, under harsh conditions, could it reach a tipping point? The idea is that changes in conditions could cause a switch from one community to another, such as from mussel beds to rockweed, and then back again. Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”

    The image of a rat sniffing around for food with its little whiskers moving back and forth to help satisfy its appetite is enough to make most people lose theirs. But those whiskers play a valuable role in helping rats determine what is in the environment around them. With support from the National Science Foundation, Mitra Hartmann and colleagues at Northwestern University in Chicago are constructing whiskered robots that can detect and then project three-dimensional virtual images of objects on to a computer screen. Scientists here don't think it's so far-fetched that one day robotic rovers, much like the ones on Mars now, might contain a set of whiskers to help them navigate the terrain around them.

    The first in a series of five documentaries plots the course of the river, from its source to its delta. In a succession of spectacular images we see the extraordinary geographical route that the Mekong takes, from the Tibetan plateau, down the mountains of the Yunnan Province in China, then through the tropical valleys and virgin forests of Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand before reaching the green plains of Vietnam. In the tropical forest, nature abounds with wild animal species, rare plants and flowers. In Laos', whole villages still pray to the Gods of Trees while in Thailand a hunter shows how the hunting of Asian elephants for preservation, now forbidden, was practiced.     Volcanic ash is known to present hazards to aviation, infrastructure, agriculture, and human and animal health. Airborne ash coats the exteriors of aircraft, enters modern jet engines and melts while coating the interior parts thus causing damage and failure. With support from the National Science Foundation, Volcanologist Dork Sahagian and his colleagues are learning more about the aerodynamic properties of ash, and how long different sizes and shapes stay in the atmosphere. They use a wind tunnel to study how ash travels in the atmosphere during and after volcanic eruptions. They want to develop ways to predict when and for how long damaging ash will fill the skies, and when it’s safe to fly again.

    The Kichwa tribe in the Sarayaku region of the Amazon in Ecuador believe that humans, animals, and plants live in harmony. They are fighting oil companies who want to exploit their ancestral land.     Algae play a vital role in the marine ecosystem. They provide food for all sorts of species, but in rare instances, they can also do harm. Harmful algal blooms occur when colonies of certain types of algae grow out of control and produce toxins that enter the food chain through fish and shellfish. Eventually, the toxins can kill larger marine animals like sea lions, manatees, turtles, and dolphins. It also makes shellfish unsafe for human consumption.

    Moko is an explorer. As he travels the world continent by continent, he makes many friends and discovers many natural phenomena which sometimes delight him, and other times scare him. Each animated episode recounts an adventure and takes an "original story" approach to explaining these natural phenomena. In this episode, having made their way beyond the great valley, Moko and Totemie discover a blanket of white stretching out in front of them. An old man tells them that once they get to the other side they will see what so many others have dreamt of seeing, but that they must fly like birds. He offers them a strange kite. As the wind picks up, they hang on tight and fly off from the salt pan.

    For centuries, land travel was restricted to how fast and far humans or animals could walk. In the 19th century, the invention of the bicycle transferred human energy to a set of wheels. During the Industrial Revolution, the invention of the steam engine led to the railroad, a change in transportation that created the tourist industry. In the early 20th century, the invention of the automobile forever changed how humans travel, and with the assembly line, Henry Ford forever changed how goods are manufactured.

    After Charles Darwin first visited the island archipelago of Galapagos in 1839, it took him another twenty years to decipher that the scene he'd witnessed was the most perfectly preserved biodiversity on the planet. His theory of evolution, published 150 years ago, pulled back the curtain on a debate that had been simmering for years, and still percolates. Today Darwin would be surprised by the tourist mecca Galapagos has become--200,000 visitors a year, 40,000 permanent residents. The impact on the most unique collection of endemic wildlife in the world has been heavy. Too many people are bringing too many of their ways (and invasive species) from the outside world that are threatening the future of this one-of-a-kind place. What would Darwin think of how Galapagos has evolved in the twenty-first century?

    A research team has found that sweat is better than saliva and tears for noninvasive testing because it provides information much the same as blood. The team has developed Band-Aid-like sensors to collect health information from sweat. Other segments include the evidence that temperature determines sex for some animals, new methods for delaying ice and frost, and a historic discovery of 500 million-year-old fossils.
