    Marine debris comes from many different sources and enters the ocean in many ways. Intentional littering and dumping are big causes. Sometimes the trash goes directly into the ocean, and sometimes marine debris is indirectly generated in a city hundreds of miles from the ocean. When someone litters on the street or parking lot, rainwater can move the trash into storm drains that empty into streams, rivers, and other bodies of water. But modern researchers now use scientific methods to study animal toxins, and they have discovered that the thousands of venom types on planet earth may help cure or control many human ailments from chronic pain to life-threatening bleeding to cancer and Parkinson's disease. Dramatizes worldwide case studies of venomous animals, their captures by scientists, and the laboratory processes that could create one man's cure from another creature's poison.

    Understanding what happens at the epicenter of an earthquake, as the tectonic plates beneath the earth shift and the earth shakes, could help better predict when and where the next big one will hit. For the past six years scientists from a number of institutions have joined in a project called San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth, or SAFOD. They have drilled to the core of the San Andreas Fault, near Parkfield California, down to a specific area along the fault known to experience a number of small earthquakes every year. By retrieving and studying core rock samples from that site, geologists Chris Marone and Brett Carpenter and hydrogeologist Demian Saffer are getting a better understanding of the types of rocks involved in major quakes, versus the rocks present at more forgiving ones.

The goal is to develop new technologies to help patients with Parkinson's disease and other debilitating medical conditions navigate the world on their own.
