At Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Christopher Williams heads the effort to further advance 3-D printing with copper, a widely used conductor in electronics. Williams is using a process called binder jetting in which an inkjet printer selectively jets glue into a bed of copper powder, layer-by-layer. The printed copper product is then taken to a furnace to fuse the particles together. With support from the National Science Foundation, Williams is addressing a major challenge in the 3-D copper printing process, which is to eliminate the porosity that develops in the part during the process. The transplanting of bone tissue, known as bone grafting, typically involves allograft, which is bone from a deceased donor, or autograft, which comes from the patient's own body. With support from the National Science Foundation, materials scientist Ramille Shah and materials engineer Adam Jakus are working to develop and improve synthetic materials available for bone grafting. Colony formation on semi-solid medium is basic characteristic of many different bacteria and an important property for microbiologists. These models illustrate the different types of colonies formed, what a colony reflects at the cellular level, how microbiologists obtain isolated colonies, and what happens when cells swarm instead of forming colonies.
Great inventions exist in the world of audio and music: stereo, surround sound, and holophonics, all known as 3D sounds. Although holophonics can be confused with surround sound because it tries to create a surrounding with sounds from different sources, holophonics have a completely different system and are only emitted through a stereo system, which when used with headphones and creates a sense of three-dimensionality.
Proteins are the workhorses of cells. With support from the National Science Foundation, University of Arkansas biochemist James Hinton has been researching their structure and function for decades. Back in the 1990’s, he had a vision to study these huge protein structures in 3D and now, in cooperation with a company called Virtalis, his vision has become a reality. The new system allows researchers to enlarge the visual of a protein to room-size, so they can examine it from all angles, to better understand its structure and function. The new 3D visuals are also helping Hinton realize his other vision to better engage students in his discoveries and science in general.
This project envisions a future where 3-D robotic systems can be produced and designed using 2-D desktop technology fabrication methods. If this feat is achieved, it would be possible for the average person to design, customize, and print a specialized robot in a matter of hours. This new project would completely automate the process, from sketches on-demand, anywhere, and with the skill of a team of professional engineers, leading to potential transformations in advanced manufacturing. The Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, known as CSAIL is focused on conducting groundbreaking research in artificial intelligence, computer systems, and the theory of computation, while also tackling pressing societal challenges such as education, health care, manufacturing and transportation.
