The National Ecological Observatory (NEON) is a large-facility project managed by NEON Inc. and funded by the National Science Foundation. NEON is a continental-scale research platform for discovering and understanding the impacts of climate change, land-use change, and invasive species on ecological systems. The connections between neurons in the brain are involved in everything humans do, and no one’s pattern is the same. Imagine the medical breakthroughs if doctors understood more about the brain’s circuitry. With support from the National Science Foundation, neuroscientist and psychiatrist Karl Deisseroth and his multidisciplinary team at Stanford University have developed a new imaging technology that essentially makes the brain transparent. They can then generate detailed 3-D images that highlight specific neuronal networks. Deisseroth has named this process “CLARITY.” Part of the National Science Foundation Series “Science Nation.”
Sunspots have fascinated sky gazers through the ages. Now state-of-the art telescopes combined with the muscle of a supercomputer called “Bluefire” are allowing scientists to accurately model these mysterious structures, and unlock their secrets. Michael Knoelker and Matthias Rempel are solar scientists working at the High Altitude Observatory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, known as NCAR, in Boulder, Colorado. With support from the National Science Foundation, their study of sunspots is critical to the understanding of how stars, like the sun, produce magnetic fields which is still one of the big unanswered questions in stellar astrophysics.
Maynette E. Smith works in the Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate at NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. She leads a team responsible for conducting independent reviews and assessments of technical and mission risks associated with space flight programs. Neuroanatomist Jacopo Annese is looking for 1,000 brains. The Director of the Brain Observatory at the University of California, San Diego is on a quest to collect, dissect, and digitize images of the human brain for the Digital Brain Library, which was launched with support from the National Science Foundation. Annese and his team look for connections, mapping brain structure and connecting it to human behavior. He believes that with a large enough catalog of brains preserved as virtual models, scientists can explore the organ in ways unheard of, revealing new insights into what makes the brain tick.
With support from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Emerging Frontiers of Research and Innovation (EFRI) program, bioengineer Gert Cauwenberghs, of the Jacobs School of Engineering and the Institute for Neural Computation at the University of California (UC), San Diego, and his colleagues are working to understand how brain circuitry controls how we move. With support from the National Science Foundation, neurologist Ken Paller and his team at Northwestern University are studying the connection between memory and sleep, and the possibilities of boosting memory storage while sleeping. A lot of the evidence has shown that slow-wave sleep is particularly important for some types of memory, and Paller’s goal is to better understand the fundamental brain mechanisms responsible for memory. Tony Ro, a neuroscientist at The City College of New York, is artificially recreating a condition called blindsight in his lab. Blindsight is a condition that some patients experience after having damage to the primary visual cortex in the back of their brains. What happens in these patients is they go cortically blind, yet they can still discriminate visual information. With support from the National Science Foundation, Ro is developing a clearer picture of how other parts of the brain, besides the visual cortex, respond to visual stimuli. He says understanding and mapping those alternative pathways might be the key to new rehabilitative therapies.
Tornadoes claim hundreds of lives and cause billions of dollars in damages in the United States. With support from the National Science Foundation, computer scientist Amy McGovern at the University of Oklahoma is working to find answers to key questions about tornado formation. While video from storm chasers and data from Doppler radar can help meteorologists understand some aspects of tornadoes, McGovern uses supercomputers to find patterns in very large datasets. She also works with weather experts to help her sort out the information in the simulations. McGovern’s ultimate goal is to come up with reliable tornado forecasting system.
Engineers are motivated to improve our quality of life, and they typically develop new products to achieve this goal. They use several steps in developing new products: design phase, testing phase, and production and maintenance phase. During the design phase, engineers specify the functional requirements of the product. They also produce a prototype to evaluate its overall effectiveness. They also consider cost, reliability, and safety. During the last two phases, engineers determine if any failures of the components are likely and where they occur. In these processes, engineers use computers to create designs, analyze functionality, and simulate how a machine, structure, or system operates.
Ever wonder what is going on in the mind of a teenager, especially one who is stressed out? UCLA Psychologist Adriana Galvan is on a quest to find out. With support from the National Science Foundation, she’s investigating the effects of daily stress on a teen’s cognition and brain function. She is monitoring the daily stress of teens by having them carry a personal digital device that provides daily measures of stress over two weeks. She is also scanning their brains and measuring their stress hormone levels. By taking this multi-method approach, Galvan is learning how daily stress influences cognitive neurodevelopment in teens.
Proteins are the workhorses of cells. With support from the National Science Foundation, University of Arkansas biochemist James Hinton has been researching their structure and function for decades. Back in the 1990’s, he had a vision to study these huge protein structures in 3D and now, in cooperation with a company called Virtalis, his vision has become a reality. The new system allows researchers to enlarge the visual of a protein to room-size, so they can examine it from all angles, to better understand its structure and function. The new 3D visuals are also helping Hinton realize his other vision to better engage students in his discoveries and science in general.
Step into the future of medicine with a look at the surgical robotics being developed at the Johns Hopkins Engineering Research Center for Computer-Integrated Surgical Systems and Technology. Here, engineers are designing less invasive surgical techniques and robots that a decade ago may have seemed like science fiction. Many of these techniques are leading to significantly quicker and less painful recoveries while giving surgeons more flexibility than ever before.
