    Corals get much of their energy from symbiotic algae that live inside their cells. When ocean temperatures rise beyond a certain threshold, the algae’s photosynthetic machinery may be damaged and produce harmful reactive oxygen molecules. This animation shows how corals subsequently eject their algae in a process called coral bleaching, which causes the corals to turn white and often eventually die.

    There is a massive southern ocean current almost two miles below the ocean's surface. Recent measurements found it’s the strongest current ever recorded at this depth and transports 40 times as much water as the Amazon River.     Can damage to coral reefs be repaired? Two researchers are looking for solutions to this question. Dr. Steve Palumbi conducts research on the corals around Ofu Island in American Samoa. He is trying to determine why these native corals can withstand ocean temperatures that, in other coral species, would lead to coral bleaching. Along with graduate student Megan Morikawa, Palumbi is testing whether these heat-resistant corals can be transplanted to reefs that have been damaged or destroyed.

    The rate of a chemical reaction is affected by a number of factors, including temperature and the concentration of reactants at the beginning of the reaction. While the chemical equation may show reactants turning into products as a straightforward process, it is actually involved and precise. How exactly do reactants turn into products? Sometimes, the answer is as simple as two atoms bumping into each other and forming a bond. Most of the time, however, the process is much more complex.     El Niño and La Niña are periodic weather patterns resulting from interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere in the Pacific Ocean. Ocean temperatures indicate the presence of El Niño and La Niña, which sometimes lead to extreme weather in many parts of the United States. NOAA climatologists closely track the development of these oscillating systems, which typically last between one to two years. With so much at stake, it’s critical to be able to monitor and forecast when El Niño or La Niña is developing so governments, businesses, and private citizens can prepare.

A group of individuals are using an app to count birds, which generates data on a changing climate. Surfers, using smart tech, track ocean acidification and coastal temperatures. Other projects include collecting data on the migration of monarch butterflies and surveying horseshoe crab populations.     While Earth's weather reports center on precipitation, temperature, wind direction, and humidity, space weather forecasts attempt to predict activity that occurs on the sun. Scientists also study how the weather on the sun will affect Earth. At the University of Michigan a team studies solar storms as they form and then barrel off the sun. Sometimes these storms hit the Earth with damaging force. Space weather has the potential to interfere with everything from satellite communications to electrical power. This team is aiming for a five-day forecast capability to give government, private industry, satellite operators, and power grid companies more time to take necessary action to protect critical infrastructure.     This animation zooms into a coral reef to explore the tiny animals that build reefs, the photosynthetic algae inside their cells, and the damaging process of coral bleaching.     As shown on the History Channel. In the remote wastes of Siberia buried under snow are the remains of one of the greatest catastrophes that the Earth has endured. 250 million years ago, huge volumes of lava spewed out onto the surface--so much that it would have buried the whole of Texas under one mile of lava. At first the temperature dipped but then the greenhouse gases that escaped from the depressurized lava caused a massive global warming. It wreaked havoc, and 95% of the species on Earth became extinct. Yet life hung on and in time this disaster paved the way for the next phase of life on earth--the age of the dinosaurs.

    David Stahle travels to ancient forests around the world, collecting tree rings to learn more about major climate and historical events dating back hundreds and thousands of years. With help from the National Science Foundation, he uses dendrochronology, or tree-ring dating, to get a snapshot of climate change over time. Stahle runs the Tree-ring Lab at the University of Arkansas, where he and fellow tree-ring researchers are learning that a trend of global warming began in the 1800s and continues today, brought about by changes in tropical sea surface temperatures of no more than a few tenths of a degree Celsius. Today Stahle is working with hydrologists and government planners in California and throughout Mexico to plan for drought and climate change events.
